Something to Think About

I just spent two weeks learning everything I could about Same Sex Domestic Violence (SSDV), which turns out to be actually pretty interesting. It's something no one thinks about (same with domestic abuse against men in heterosexual relationships), but yet is super common. Yet, there are no resources and few people believe reports of abuse. Most of it isn't physical abuse, it's primarily psychological/emotional abuse and involves belittling and isolating people. While a lot of the forms of abuse are similar to heterosexual abuse there are three types of abuse that are unique and include internalised homophobia, which is dislike of self for being same sex attracted, abuse due to or from HIV, either fear of getting it from the abusive partner or feeling like one won't find/doesn't deserve a partner because of HIV status, or fear of being outed by partner or from reporting abuse.
It's a tricky issue and hard to deal with with current resources and the focus of domestic violence as men abusing women. It's one of those things I never though about, but is interesting to think about.
